Healthy (and delicious) takeaway options

Thinking about having takeaway tonight?

Life is busy and it’s not always possible to whip up a meal from scratch at the end of the day.

When it comes to takeaway, some choices are healthier than others but I'm a big believer that healthy can still be delicious! 😋

Asian food

·      Healthy – rice paper rolls, stir-fries with lean meat and vegetables, edamame (Japanese soybean dish), miso soup, sushi, sashimi, pho (Vietnamese noodle soup), steamed rice

·      Less healthy – deep-fried foods (e.g. spring rolls, dim sims, curry puffs), dishes containing coconut cream or milk

Mexican

·      Healthy – tacos, burritos or fajitas with lots of salad (lettuce, grated cheese, cucumber, tomato, red onion), bean dishes, burrito bowls

·      Less healthy – large amounts of sour cream and dishes with lots of melted cheese, e.g. enchiladas, quesadillas, nachos

Indian

·      Healthy – tomato-based fish or chicken curries (e.g. madras), tandoori, dahl, vegetable curries, roti

·      Less healthy – creamy curries (e.g. korma, butter chicken, masala, rogan josh), onion bhaji, samosas

Lebanese/Turkish

·      Healthy – tabouli, hummus, salads, baba ganoush, lean meat kebabs, Fattoush salad, Lebanese green bean stew

·      Less healthy – deep-fried dishes (e.g. falafel, kibbeh), fatty meats

Greek

·      Healthy – Greek salad, grilled fish/calamari, grilled octopus salad, souvlaki with vegetables, tzatziki

·      Less healthy – cheesy dishes (e.g. moussaka, spanakopita), fatty meats

Italian

·      Healthy – tomato-based sauces (e.g. bolognese, napolitana, marinara), minestrone, bruschetta, thin pizza bases with healthy toppings (lean meats/chicken/prawns and vegetables)

·      Less healthy – cheesy/creamy sauces (e.g. boscaiola, alfredo, carbonara), creamy risotto, canoli, deep-pan pizzas with processed meats

Seafood

·      Healthy – grilled fish, salad or vegetables (instead of chips), marinated seafood, marinara

·      Less healthy – battered, crumbed and deep-fried fish or seafood, chips
