Healthy party snacks (kid-approved!)

This is the time of year when children all over Australia are coming home from school saying “we’re having a class party and we have to bring something to share”.

Does that sound familiar?

As much as I’d love for my children to take a plate of vegie sticks and hummus to a class party, I am a realist and I know that probably wouldn’t go down too well. Having said that, most kids can be a bit challenging when they have been overloaded with junk so I try to go for low-sugar, additive-free options.

Here are some healthy kid-approved snack suggestions that would work well for class parties and any other social gatherings where you are asked to bring a plat e :

  • Fruit kebabs (grapes, strawberries, pineapple, watermelon and rockmelon work well)

  • Sushi

  • Lightly salted popcorn

  • Mini pizzas made with wholemeal breakfast muffins

  • Cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices and cheese cubes on toothpicks

  • Corn chips and salsa/guacamole

  • A fruit platter (in the shape of a Christmas tree for bonus points!) Mini meat balls and sauce

  • Rice paper rolls

If you are feeling particularly creative, you could put together a nibble plate with fruit, cheese cubes, vegie sticks, crackers, dips, boiled egg and bliss balls
